Five generations of farming in Green Valley began when the Balestra family arrived from Italy in the late 1800s. The first wine grapes went in the ground in 1930, head pruned and dry farmed Petite Sirah and Gamay. Their parents, Robert and Renee, started making wine as a hobby in the early 2000s. In 2019, Candace and Jenna Balestra launched R. Balestra Winery in Fairfield. Jenna, an enologist, and Candace, a PCA, shape the program around Petite Sirah, Gamay, Zinfandel, and Carignan.
