Twenty-seven acres between Adrian and Tecumseh, Michigan, ground the Utter family bought in 1996. Bob Utter grew serious about viticulture in 2004, took his training through VESTA, the national grape and wine education program, and planted the vineyard in 2005. The first harvest came in 2007. Flying Otter launched commercially in 2010, built on twelve varieties of cold-hardy red and white grapes, all estate-grown. No outside fruit, no bulk wine. The farm carries Environmentally Verified status under multiple MAEAP sustainability systems. Hard ciders use apple cider sourced from nearby Kapnick Orchards. The name traces back to Bob's Swedish heritage, where 'Utter' means otter.
