Founded in 1989 by Peter Botham, in Wisconsin's Iowa County Uplands, surrounded by more than 900 acres of nature conservancy. The property began as a dairy farm, built in the early 1900s. A circa-1900 barn now houses the tasting room, gallery, gift shop and indoor event spaces. In 2002, a new, 5000-square-foot winery replaced the original, and all wines are produced on site. The estate grows red wine grapes including Marechal Foch and Leon Millot, and purchases white grapes mostly from New York's Finger Lakes Region, working with Vidal Blanc, Seyval Blanc and Geisenheim. In 2022, Peter and Sarah's son Mills joined as chief operating officer and assistant winemaker. More than 150 medals line the tasting room wall. Botham is the only Wisconsin winery to earn a double gold medal on an estate-grown red wine in international competition, twice. Big Stuff Red has won double gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition twice, and Epicurious.com named Uplands Reserve Wisconsin's best wine.
