Winemaking in Winterbach runs five centuries deep. The Ellwanger family began in 1514, though Weingut Jürgen Ellwanger as it stands was founded in 1949 by Gottlob Ellwanger. Today Jörg, Sylvia, and Felix Ellwanger tend 26 hectares across five vineyard sites, working primarily with Riesling, Lemberger, and Trollinger. The program tilts toward red wine, 65 percent of production, with white making up the balance. The house holds membership in both Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter and the HADES study group. Recent recognition includes a Gault Millau award in 2022 and an Eichelmann award in 2023. The 2020 HADES Zweigelt-Rebe trocken placed second in the Vinum Red Wine Prize in 2023.
