Johannes Schmitz works only with Riesling, drawing from two steep Mosel vineyards. Ürziger Würzgarten, where red soils kept phylloxera at bay, holds more than 75% of the house's ungrafted vines. Many are over 60 years old, some reaching a century. The vineyard permitted these wurzelechte plantings until 2008. Across the valley, Erdener Treppchen contributes 40-year-old vines to the program.
