Ernest and Julio Gallo founded their winery on September 22, 1933, producing 177,847 gallons in the first year. André sparkling wine, introduced in 1966, became the largest selling sparkling wine brand in the U.S. The same year, Gallo was recognized as the largest winery in the United States by sales volume. E&J Brandy arrived in 1975, followed by Carlo Rossi. Bartles & Jaymes wine coolers launched in 1984. Gallo Estate Wines marked the house's entry into super-premium territory in 1993, with Gallo of Sonoma following in 1994. Ecco Domani, introduced in 1996, was the winery's first foreign-based brand. The Los Angeles County Fair named them Winery of the Century in 1999. The International Wine and Spirits Competition awarded Best American Wine Producer in 2000. In 2005, Gallo became the first U.S. winery to receive ISO 14001 certification. The tasting room is located in Healdsburg.
