About
Matteo and Carolina Carozzo bought an abandoned field near Avondale in 1928. The first vines of the home vineyard went into that ground in 1999, and Pop Pop Jim ran over 100 miles of wire to trellis seven acres. Today Anthony Vietri and his family run the place, farming north Italian and French varieties on site. Here, the farmer is the winemaker. The plot splits into four distinct terroirs, each yielding a single wine from a mix of grapes. La Prima Donna blends tocai, malvasia bianca, fiano, pinot grigio, and petit manseng. Silk is a dry rosato of corvina veronese, barbera, nebbiolo, carmine, and petit verdot. Mahogany Va La brings together eight red varieties, including sagrantino, lagrein, and charbono. Cedar draws on nine clones of nebbiolo. Tastings happen in a century-old barn, looking out over the vines.
