Along Short Hill Mountain in Loudoun County, 318 acres make up Windham Farm, purchased by George and Nicki Bazaco in 1983. Black Angus cattle still graze the land. The Bazaco family has run the operation for four decades, 41 years of winemaking. That name honors George's grandmother, Doukénie, who left Greece at 14. Twenty three acres are planted to 12 grape varieties, and the wines now reach more than 40 states. The original tasting room sat in the basement of a white house built before the Civil War. Doukénie's daughter Hope was one of the winery's first wine educators, and after her death in 2024 at age 99, the winery produces a raspberry Merlot dessert wine called Hope's Legacy.
