Picnic-Friendly Wineries in Napa Valley

Pack a spread and settle in. Some tasting visits are a quick in and out. These are the opposite. Each of these Napa wineries keeps a dedicated place to open a bottle, lay out some food, and let an afternoon go long. Two things to know before you fill the cooler. Most Napa wineries ask you to reserve ahead, and a picnic here often means a table set among the vines rather than a blanket on the grass, though a few still do the blanket version too.

When you would rather they packed it for you

Black Stallion Estate Winery sits on the grounds of a former equestrian center along the Silverado Trail. You can reserve a private outdoor table set among the vineyards, gardens, and water features, and the kitchen prepares a curated picnic lunch in house, with produce pulled from the winery garden. It is the version of a picnic where you bring nothing and still eat well.

Clif Family Winery leans into the food side of the day. Started by Clif Bar's Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford, it gives you two easy paths. Pre-order a picnic to carry with you, packed to go with compostable plates and cutlery, or pull up to their Bruschetteria food truck for lunch alongside the tasting. Either way the meal is handled and you get to focus on the wine and the view.

02

When you want to bring your own spread

Beringer Vineyards is one of Napa's oldest continuously operating wineries, and its picnic grounds sit near the Rhine House, the 19th century former residence that now serves as the tasting room. This is a place where the setting does most of the work. You bring the basket, the history and the architecture do the rest.

Freemark Abbey is a classic St. Helena stop with a dedicated picnic area, an unfussy place to spread out between tastings. No production, no fanfare, just a good spot to sit down for a while.

03

The point of it

However you do it, the ritual is the same. A bottle, a view, and nowhere else to be. The full list runs longer than these four, but any of them will give you the version of Napa where the afternoon is yours to keep.
